Taking NMN Can Prevent Periodontal Disease!

The Sirtuin gene family consists of seven genes from SIRT1 to SIRT7. Sirtuin proteins act as NAD+-dependent deacetylases. The analysis results indicate that in WT-Aged (normal elderly) mice, the content of SIRT3 in the alveolar bone decreased compared to WT-Young (normal young) mice, suggesting a decrease in SIRT3 function with aging. Moreover, KO-Aged (SIRT3-deficient elderly) mice showed the highest bone resorption assay values in the alveolar bone compared to the other four groups, indicating actual bone loss. Based on these results, it is suggested that the reduction of alveolar bone in age-related periodontal disease may be due to the deterioration of bone metabolism caused by the decreased function of SIRT3, leading to a direction towards bone resorption.

Furthermore, it was found that with the decrease in SIRT3 function, mitochondrial function in gingival tissue weakened, and damage from reactive oxygen species increased. This also suggests a significant impact of decreased SIRT3 function on the progression of age-related periodontal disease.
